Case Study: Chiller Installation for University of Bath Sports Village

At the University of Bath Sports Training Village, Cooltherm's expertise was put to the test in a comprehensive project aimed at upgrading the facility's chilled water infrastructure for its £35 million multi-discipline training complex.

Our team installed a Geoclima Turbocor chiller with two compressors, delivering the higher capacity needed to serve a newly extended building while still offering exceptional turndown for low winter loads and built-in redundancy for the site's chilled water system.

This project demonstrates Cooltherm's ability to deliver customised solutions that address the niche requirements of the leisure and sports sector, showcasing our commitment to supporting facilities in their mission to provide world-class training environments.

FAQs

Yes. Leisure centres often have high energy demands because they need to heat, cool and ventilate several different spaces at once. Upgrading inefficient systems, improving controls and using energy-efficient chillers, heat pumps or air handling units can help reduce running costs while maintaining comfortable conditions.

Gyms, studios and sports halls can quickly become hot, humid or uncomfortable during busy periods. Effective air conditioning, ventilation and temperature control help maintain a more comfortable environment for visitors, staff and instructors, especially during classes, events or peak usage times.

Yes. A leisure centre often includes spaces with very different needs, such as swimming pools, gyms, studios, cafés, reception areas, changing rooms, saunas and sports halls. HVAC systems can be designed around each zone so every area gets the right level of heating, cooling and ventilation.

Air quality can be improved through effective ventilation, air handling units, filtration and regular maintenance. This helps remove stale air, manage humidity, support a fresher indoor environment and improve comfort for visitors and staff.

Planned maintenance helps identify faults early, reduce unexpected breakdowns and keep critical leisure centre systems running reliably. This is especially important for facilities with gyms, pools, sports halls, studios, cafés, saunas and steam rooms, where heating, cooling or ventilation issues can quickly affect visitor comfort, bookings, classes and day-to-day operations.

The right chiller specification depends on the building size, cooling demand, pool or gym requirements, operating hours, energy-efficiency goals and available plant space. Leisure centres should consider capacity, refrigerant type, efficiency ratings, noise levels, footprint, resilience, maintenance access and whether the chiller can support low-carbon or low-GWP requirements.
