Bespoke Chiller Install at Royal Glamorgan Hospital

The Project

Specialist chiller and air conditioning design and installation business Cooltherm was chosen to design and install replacement chillers for the pharmacy cold room in the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, a district general hospital in South Wales.

Customer Requirements

The cold room holds hundreds of thousands of pounds of life saving pharmaceuticals and serves an integral department within the hospital. The existing chiller was proving to be unreliable and no longer suitable for providing the critical cooling required. It was also becoming increasingly costly to run due to constant breakdowns and a lack of automatic fault detection and temperature alarms.

Cwm Taf University Health Board wanted a full turnkey solution, from design to commissioning of run and standby refrigeration systems to create a system as fail safe as possible to suit the existing +4ºC Pharmacy cold room.

The Cooltherm Solution

The design included a N+1 refrigeration system with essential backup and the integration of multiple bespoke alarms to create minor and critical monitoring scenarios, along with new power supplies with the option of a manual switch over in the event of a power cut. Also included was full temperature mapping and logging of the cold room. Cooltherm reorganised the location of the units to maximise efficiencies, including replacing the existing cold room door with an automatic sliding door with auto closure on a timer.

The biggest challenge for the team was the installation and trying to minimise disruptions in such a busy department, also imperative was maintaining the operational cold rooms whilst the work was being completed.  The Senior Projects Manager for Cooltherm managed the project and said “This was a challenging project, but the team really pulled together in order to deliver a superior solution for the hospital. The University Health Board have also contacted us to help with the cold rooms and freezer facilities in the hospital kitchens in the future”.
